Pendozalis - ΠΕΝΤΟΖΑΛΙΣ

Pendozalis (Πεντοζάλις) is a Pyrrichios from the island of Kriti.  The name of the dance literally means “5 steps”.  It was created during the Ottoman Turkish occupation.   The name was in reference to the fact that when it was created during the 18th century, it was the 5th revolt, incited by the 12 Kritan leaders, to shed the Turkish yoke.

The men are wearing the Kritan headdress called the siriki.   The black is sometimes said to representing mourning and the draping tassels the tears shed during the oppression of their people and culture during the Ottoman Turkish domination.
