Mahairia - Μαχαιρια

Μahairia  (Μαχαίρια), like Serra,  was brought to modern Hellas (Greece), on a large scale, in the aftermath of the Greek/Armenian/Assyrian Genocide.

In this region, now part of Turkey, Xenephon (warrior, general and student of Sokrates) noted the Pontian Greek Pyrrichoi for the historic record in his book "The Anavasis" (also known as "the March of the 10,000") shortly after 400 BC.

The traditional "knives" that have been utilized in this dance are more accurately called "short swords".  They harken back to the days of the Akrites (Ακριταί) of the Greek Byzantine Empire.
